A Clip Studio Paint alternative that runs in your browser

These are different tools for different jobs. Clip Studio Paint is an excellent, mature drawing application. MangaForge is a younger, browser-based manga workspace built around planning a chapter and laying out its pages. This page sets out where each one fits, so you can choose without guessing.

The short version

Clip Studio Paint, made by CELSYS, is a general drawing and painting application that Celsys positions for illustration, comics, manga, webtoons and animation. Its comic tools run from storyboard to finishing, and it ships with panel frames, speech balloons, effect lines and screentones. It has been refined for years, and it shows.

MangaForge is a manga maker that opens in a browser tab. It is in beta. It puts story planning, the name stage, panel layout and drawing in one place, and it does not generate images. If your main problem is getting from an idea to a finished page without installing software or juggling files, that is the gap it aims at. If your main need is the deepest possible drawing toolset, it is not.

Who this is for

  • You want to start a manga in a browser on a laptop or an iPad, with no install.
  • You plan the story first and want the plan, the name and the pages in one connected file.
  • You work with an editor, an assistant or a co-writer and want to edit the same chapter together in real time.
  • You are comparing manga software for a small team or a classroom and need something people can open from a link.

Who should stay on Clip Studio Paint

  • You rely on its 3D models, materials and the Clip Studio Assets store for brushes and backgrounds. MangaForge does not try to match that library.
  • You need a drawing engine with years of brush, color and tool refinement behind it.
  • You work offline on a desktop and want a locally installed application.
  • You are mid-project, with a pipeline built on Clip Studio Paint files and an assistant who uses it too. Switching mid-series costs more than it saves.
  • You work in animation or webtoon formats, which Celsys lists among its supported uses.

Working on iPad and in the browser

If you searched for a browser manga maker or a manga maker for iPad, the practical difference is installation. Clip Studio Paint has native apps for iPad and other platforms. MangaForge is a web app: open the link, sign in, draw. The tradeoff is that it depends on the browser, and it will not match a native desktop application for raw tool depth.

On the free and online side of the market, there are several web-based drawing tools. Most are general sketch or paint apps. MangaForge is narrower: it is built for a manga chapter, from beats to print-ready export, rather than for any drawing.

How to decide

Ask where your time goes. If most of it goes into finishing art, inking, toning and polishing, a deep drawing application is the right home, and Clip Studio Paint is a safe pick. If most of it goes into the stage before that, working out what happens, in what order, across how many pages, a workspace built around the chapter can save real effort.

Many people will reasonably use both. Rough out the name in a browser where a collaborator can comment live, then finish selected pages in the application you already know. Nothing about choosing one forbids the other.

Moving between them

MangaForge does not import Clip Studio Paint’s native .clip project files, and layer-for-layer round trips are not supported. Clip Studio Paint, by contrast, documents export to PNG, JPEG, TIFF, PDF and Photoshop (PSD) formats, and batch export of multi-page projects. So the realistic path is to export your pages from Clip Studio Paint as images and redraw or rework them in MangaForge.

Going the other way, MangaForge exports finished pages as PNG or JPEG, with bleed, trim and Japanese crop marks available for print. Those images open in any program, including Clip Studio Paint, as flat pages.

A sensible trial: move one chapter outline and one page, not a series. See how the name stage and panel layout feel before you commit. For background on those steps, read our guides to making a manga storyboard and manga panel layout, or see what “no AI” means in MangaForge. The MangaForge home page shows the workspace.

Frequently asked questions

Is MangaForge a replacement for Clip Studio Paint?
For some people, not for everyone. MangaForge covers planning, name (ネーム), panel layout, drawing and print export in a browser. Clip Studio Paint has a far larger toolset, 3D models and an asset store. If you rely on those, it remains the stronger choice.
Can I make manga on an iPad with MangaForge?
Yes, in the iPad’s browser. MangaForge is a web app, so there is nothing to install. Clip Studio Paint also offers an iPad app, per Celsys’ system requirements page, so the choice there comes down to workflow, not availability.
Is MangaForge a free Clip Studio Paint alternative?
This page does not compare prices, because plans change. MangaForge is in beta, and its current terms are on the sign-up page. Celsys describes its own plans and trial on clipstudio.net.
Can I open Clip Studio Paint files in MangaForge?
MangaForge does not read .clip project files. Clip Studio Paint can export pages as PNG, JPEG and Photoshop (PSD) files, so the practical route is exported images. Test one page before moving a whole project.
Does MangaForge generate artwork with AI?
No. MangaForge has no image generation. You plan, lay out and draw every page yourself.
